Discussion essay on language teaching

In my opinion, English is a very important subject for children to learn at school because they will have to use it throughout their personal and professional lives, as a consequence of the globalized world in which they live. For this reason, I believe firmly that teachers have to be qualified to teach their pupils correctly. According to the document of Action Plan for Teachers by Callum Robertson, the key to teach children to be able to speak English are these three elements: engage, which means getting the students interested in the subject; studying, in any lesson students usually need something to study; and activating, in this stage the students are given tasks, normally writing and speaking activities.

Due to all this factors, I could say that I will introduce foreign language learning for young children with the project called CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The principal objective of this project, is introducing the English language in other areas of knowledge as for example Arts, Music, Sciences or ICT (Information and Communication Technologies). Another way of introducing English in the classrooms is exchanging letters with foreigner students. In this way, children will learn English by means of the need to understand what their English friends say to them, therefore, the learning could be functional. Nevertheless, if we want to teach a foreign language at lower levels, teachers have to introduce it by playing and singing doing meaningful activities from that children could learn English in a fan way, so that they lose the fear of learning a language that they do not know. For example, teachers could sing infant English songs.

In conclusion, I think that English is a very beautiful language that with pupils could learn hanging fun. I also think that teaching a foreign language the first thing to do is introducing oral skills and then written skills. But the most important things that teachers should not forget is that they are teaching to bring up good professionals but first of all they are teaching children to be good citizens.
